With Portuguese you’ll be able to communicate with lots of people – not only in Portugal. Portuguese is the native language of 220 million people, and an estimated 260 million people speak Portuguese as their first or second language. It’s the sole official language of Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe, and has co-official status in many other territories.
Portuguese is related to other popular languages. Portuguese is a part of the Ibero-Romance group of languages, and it has a lot in common with French, Italian, Spanish and other Latin-based languages. So if you already know one of these languages, Portuguese will be easier for you. And if you don’t, then knowing some Portuguese can help you learn these other languages later.
It’s one of the top-ranking world languages. Portuguese is generally held to be the fifth-most spoken language in the world, and it’s the world’s third most-spoken European language.
