German is the native language of about 100 million people, making it the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and one of the major languages of the world. The German language lost its longest word thanks to a change in the law to conform with EU regulations. “Rindfleisch–
tragungsgesetz” – meaning “law delegating beef label monitoring” – was introduced in 1999 in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and ceased to exist as an official word in June 2013 when new regulations came into force that rendered the word redundant.
